Miniature food. How do you get started with a hobby like this?

  • It all started when I was setting up a dollhouse for my daughter. Once I realized there was a whole world of miniature enthusiasts out there with all kinds of tips and instructions, I quickly realized I wouldn’t be able to stop once the dollhouse was finished.

Once the kitchen was finished, I wanted to add some food to it as well. That’s how it all started. I searched for “miniature food” on YouTube just once. And there it was—my new hobby.

You furnished an entire dollhouse but got hooked on the food in particular. Why?

  • Because it looks so incredibly realistic. When you work with clay, the possibilities are endless, and there are so many techniques and materials that make realistic creations possible.

What materials do you use?

  • I work mainly with polymer clay, but I also use other materials when they’re a better fit, and I combine materials. That’s the appeal—being able to come up with different solutions for different creations.

When you’re sitting there at your craft table, what goes through your mind?

  • Working with clay is meditative. Most of the time, I’ve already figured out the solution for a piece beforehand. The bulk of the mental work happens at other times. When I have trouble sleeping, it’s a blessing to be able to redirect my thoughts toward a solution for a miniature instead of something that’s worrying me.

Once I’m actually sitting there creating, my thoughts float completely freely, and I enter a bubble where I can just be.

What advice do you have for someone who’s curious about getting started?

  • You just need to get started. Many people think you need tons of materials, tools, and so on, but if you think about it, you usually have plenty at home. All you need is clay—three types. A small starter kit with several colors, a package of translucent clay, and a bottle of liquid clay. You can mix these to create any shade or texture you want. There are different brands. I mostly use Fimo.
